Christian Baptism:

I.  Is an Act of Obedience to Christ

Water baptism comes after salvation, as an act of obedience.

Matthew 28:18-20
18        Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19        Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20        and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.""
(NIV)

II.  Symbolizes a Cleansing that Has Already Taken Place

Water baptism is symbolic of the cleansing that has already taken place by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 2:8-9
8          For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
9          not by works, so that no one can boast.
(NIV)

It identifies the believer with the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Romans 6:3-5
3          Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
4          We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5          If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.
(NIV)

Galatians 2:20
20        I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who
